Fin de Semana a Finca La Aguada

October 2, 2017

View of the Río Cauca from Finca La Aguada. The silence is almost loud out here.

Good friends, Nora & Ramiro invited us to their finca, La Aguada this past weekend. Many, many Colombianos escape the big cities for a weekend at the finca. Though Colombia is a very poor country, with an average monthly wage of just $271 USD, people are able to keep their fincas because they've been in their families for many generations.

Friends at La Aguada. By & Mariah, Nora, Ramiro & Anna Lucia. Great friends, wonderful weekend!

La Aguada has been in Ramiro's family since 1922, when his grandfather built the house on property owned by his grandmother.

La Aguada is a 2 hour drive from Medellin, near the pueblo of Fredonia, and very far from everything!

More pictures of our weekend at La Aguada. Enjoy!

Disfruta!

Nothing to do here but relax.

Nada que hacer aqui pero relajarse

The horse is laughing at the city people!

An important part of the day at La Aguada is hearing the dinner bell!

 No stress here, Nora!

Aquí no hay estrés, Nora!

Mister turkey gobbled at us on cue. He's great entertainment.

El señor Turquía nos devoró la señal. Es un gran entretenimiento.

Señor Victor saddles the horses for an early morning ride around the finca. Victor is one of six employees at Finca La Aguada.

(Note: We declined this activity--Porque? No riding for many years.)

Mariah & her new friend, Christian, in the center of Fredonia. We bought cookies his grandmother made. Delicious!

Miriam made us delicious meals. Her rice soup, arepas, avocado salad and tortillas are wonderful!

In addition to many coffee farms, this area has orchards of oranges, tangerines, guava, mango, banana, plantains and many varieties of beans & vegetables. The area around Fredonia is becoming developed and there is a danger that its rural appeal is being lost.

Enter here, and experience another world.

Hasta luego, La Aguada. Entra aquí, y experimenta otro mundo.

Leaving La Aguada: Entering this gate takes you to another world, a land of relaxation, ease, good food, great friends, wonderful memories, and a connection to a past that's quickly disappearing. Once, not so long ago, the only way to find La Aguada was on horseback. People traveled much longer than 2 hours to arrive here, and they stayed much longer, too. La Aguada means watering hole, or 'watery place,' in other words, a place where body and soul are refreshed and renewed. It certainly meant that for us. After living in the city for several months, we needed La Aguada more than we knew. Medellin is wonderful, and we love living there. But the finca is a spiritual experience, and more than just a campsite. There are more shades of green than we could imagine; birds chatter day and night; the aroma of the country is intoxicating; and the silence, especially after dark, is palpable. It's easy to see why people yearn to go to the country, to places like La Aguada.

Many thanks to friends Nora & Ramiro, and Victor & Miriam for our wonderful weekend in the country. It was Super Bacano!
